Posted on August 31 2024
In the latest episode of the Working Title Female Podcast, we had the pleasure of chatting with Shamira, a software engineer with an impressive background in golf. Her journey from swinging clubs on the LPGA circuit to coding in a tech career is nothing short of inspiring, offering valuable insights for anyone navigating major life transitions.
A Love for Golf, Inspired by Family Shamira’s journey into golf began in a rather heartwarming way—thanks to her grandmother. It all started when her grandma watched Tiger Woods on TV and thought Shamira could give golf a shot. Encouraged by her father, Shamira began taking lessons and quickly fell in love with the sport. Even though basketball was another sport she dabbled in, golf was where her heart truly belonged.
Navigating the Competitive Golf Scene Growing up in the Midwest, Shamira found herself playing in casual local tournaments before diving into the more competitive junior golf circuit. She shared how her path to playing college golf wasn't straightforward. It wasn’t until she attended a summer golf camp at Ohio State that she realized she wanted to pursue golf seriously. This realization set her on a path to earning a spot on the Kent State women’s golf team, where she honed her skills both on and off the course.
Lessons Learned and the Value of Team Spirit One of the most insightful parts of Shamira’s story was her experience balancing the individual nature of golf with the team environment in college. She learned that while you’re always striving to be your best, it’s equally important to support your teammates. This sense of camaraderie was something she cherished during her time at Kent State.
The Challenge of Going Pro Shamira’s decision to go professional wasn’t taken lightly. She attended Q school, a crucial step for golfers aiming to turn pro, but quickly realized the financial pressures and challenges that came with it. The reality of needing substantial sponsorship and the costs involved made her rethink her career path.
Pivoting to a New Passion: Law and Tech After deciding against a professional golf career, Shamira didn’t just settle—she pivoted. Driven by her desire to advocate for female athletes who, like her, faced financial challenges in their careers, she decided to go to law school. But that wasn’t the end of her journey. During law school, she discovered a passion for coding and tech, leading her to switch gears once again. She completed a coding bootcamp and is now a successful software engineer.
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Athletes Throughout the podcast, Shamira emphasized the importance of being kind to yourself and understanding that your value isn’t tied to your performance. Her advice to young athletes is to balance ambition with self-compassion and to not be afraid to pivot when your passions change.
A Life of Perseverance and Adaptability Shamira’s journey from golf to tech is a testament to her grit, adaptability, and unwavering determination. Whether she’s tackling a tough course or debugging code, Shamira continues to inspire with her resilience and willingness to embrace new challenges.
