Large Square Iconic Surabaya Statue Indonesian Motif

One of Surabaya’s most famous icons is the Statue of Suro and Baya made of the Sura fish (shark) and baya (alligator). A tale of two powerful animals in the fight for territory with no fear of death, it describes the importance of the city of Surabaya during the fight for Indonesia’s independence. Many people also believed that the name of the city comes from the words “Sura” (which means ready or brave) and “Baya” (which means danger).
